If The Thunder Don't Get You

"Won't you try just a little bit harder, couldn't you try just a little bit more . . ."
The Wheel, Robert Hunter

Well we know where this is going . . .

I don't know if it possible to train for a handstand in middle age. There is a pretty good progression here:  http://www.mymadmethods.com/articles/strength-power-articles/645-jenny-farber-how-to-do-handstands
But  for me anyway it's not like if you do a, then b, you will get to c. It's more like do a, then b, wow that feels better, and eventually may stumble upon c, or maybe d, I seem to need to yaw around for a bit. With everything.  The handstand is a good long term goal but I'm gonna have some fun getting there.

Saturday, three miles with daughter and dog. Then get B from grandma's and go to lunch.  It is his 20th birthday; there are plays so celebration will need to wait.  Waiter approaches Brigid from the rear and asks:  "and what would the young man like ?"  She pretends not to notice, but I could feel her tense.  Her shoulders are so broad she looks like a linebacker sitting down.  I should make time  for workout to make it three for the week, but it was four last and gonna be four next so fuck it.  Be good to yourself and just stop old man.
I'd forgotten about archive.org and the Barton Hall shows in May of 1977, 'bout four weeks before I graduated from high school, and about four weeks from where Ian is now.  It's good to have a marker.  Spend Saturday alternately vacuuming with BK's Miele canister from last week's soul ripper and digging up old Dead shows.
Sunday.  The call times are noon and 12:30.  Ian and I go out with the Rose.  A walk with him is a measure of teenage testosterone.  How fast can we grind Dad into the dirt, given that Ian has about three inches, at least, on me in leg length.  Keep up, feed him, give him money, and drop him off.  That is it with teenagers.  They deign to spend time with you, you feed them, give them money, and then drop them off.  And wait for their return.
That afternoon, take B in with to CT session.  Good class as usual.  Part of the menu is double cleans and she pushes twin 24's which is fine and leaves me feeling beastly in a minor way.
Sprint to leave and get to Brazen Head to use up Groupon.  It its packed and an hour wait.  B looks baffled and hungry.  So I wasted 25.00 and we head to LL for bar burgers to drop another 40.00.
Get home and look for Barton Hall on Youtube. Ex-pat Chris Chase in Southern Japan has posted a bunch of stuff.  DM and we become internet buds immediately.  Middle aged men finding common ground in Jerry's liquid metal.  http://www.youtube.com/user/chasefukuoka61#p/u/19/jVjySFYM9jw
Monday.
EH late.  Pradeep is gone Mondays so its EH in prime time.  She gives a big smile and hello and I can tell she is a little nervous and is glad to see loyal follower and then grinds me into the mat for 60 min just like I wanted her to.  Very. Strong. Class.
Get home.  I'd asked Brigid to do a flank steak stir fry, she has run with that to an awesome meal. Flank steak, noodles, salad, and pecan shortbread desert.  Don't know what I did to deserve her, she cooked, I clean up, that's the deal; heartbreaker.  Get DM's from new youtube buddy and download a bunch of Dead shows I went to slightly less than 34 years ago.  God did I have it good growing up.
Tuesday.
Gonna be a 30 min ct fest in eve, so in early to work on shit.  Tripod headstands, wall handstands, yogi headstands for 20 min.  No goal other than get better, and the yogi headstands are getting much stronger.  Walk over and work on double bu cleans with the 24's until sticking consistently.  It's a stupid human trick but looks totally badass.
30 minutes ct before group Patxi's feed.  The circuit is 8+8 snatches, 10 swing to squat, eight dolphin to dolphin plank x 5.  Mobility voodoo between circuits.  Its a good quick hit and after go eat, spilling onto the sidewalk in the great neighborhood of Hayes Valley armed with 60.00 worth of Chicago deep dish to feed the masses upon arrival home.  Every one has eaten; ok, pizza feed tomorrow.
Wednesday.  Its been a grind of a week since a client got a writ of execution on a 667k judgment served just before their first round of re-cap dollars.  The timing was too good, this a death to the company deal.
Thinking about MH late Wednesday, but fuck it.  I have all this great pizza at home and want a family dinner.  I'll skip class and take an early boat; they'll all drop what they are doing and spend time with Dad.  Right; announce my early arrival, no one could give a shit, except of course the dog.  It dawns on me, slowly as usual, that they have moved on, and it is a waste of time to try to recreate those good provider/cook Dad dinners.  They've gotten over it, so don't feel all pissy; you get over it too.

Feed, give money, drop off, leave, wait for return.  That's your job.  Don't try to do more, unless they instigate.  You do, they look at you like you are from outer space.  Should have gone to class.

Late emails confirm business will live through recap and feeling pretty damn good about it, even if spaceman.
That glow lasts less than 12 hours 'cause by 7:30 am major shit blowing up.  Fucking blown four months of resolution mode and we are now looking at seven figure litigation.  Grist for the mill.  Hit gym really late because I don't skip two days in a row, goes like:
5+5 pushups to renegade rows x 2, 50lb dumbells
8, 10, 12 squat to press, 90lb barbell
5+5x2 sls, 16kg bu second
10 20kg figure 8 to hold, 10 24kg same
3x
5 TGU, 10 24kg single are swings each side before coming back down.  They've completely rearranged gym and I am total show dog which sucks.  Not prepared for proprioceptive switch looking up at 40 foot ceiling as opposed to eight foot.  So look at the bell in your hand, that's what you ought to be doing anyway.
30/30 24kg swings, 20 rep pace x 5.

That was a goodin'

The wheel is turning
and you can't slow down
You can't let go
and you can't hold on
You can't go back
and you can't stand still
If the thunder don't get you
then the lightning will.
