Niceties

"I ain't living like I should.
A little rest might do me good.
Got to sinking in the place where I once stood.
Now I ain't living like I should."

Danko/Manuel, Jason Isbell

This is really good:

It's better for me." "Do I see myself here in three years ? If the answer is no, why wait ?

Or, I am just fucking done. See ya.

Saturday
15:15 x 80 7 then 8 rep pace, 16kg.

Sunday
Good ct throw down.

Monday trial prep, no exercise
Tuesday, trial, no exercise
Wednesday, gotta run home and feed. No exercise
Three days off but crappy sleep and stress; no relaxation, no real recuperation just a noxious cortisol infused swamp.

Thursday
Ok, enough. To gym for:

100 alternating single arm swing warm up
1-3+1-3 28kg press lasses
5 twin 28 kg from squats
20 28kg renegade rows
30 24kg snatches
1 28kg tgu
x4. Slogging through wet cement.

Friday
30:30 24kg swings 20 reps
x10
90 minute Pradeep class. Awesome is overused but it really was.

Saturday
Run around with Brigid, feel good doing it.

Sunday.  CT fun.

Monday
I don't remember but I am sure it was great.

Tuesday
Yoga was involved; big stretch

Wednesday
Work.  Then with @510kettlebeller and @twiddlebells for Lyon St. Steps.  4x, alternate 20 and 24, then twice more at top.

Thursday, T-Day.  1-10-1 long cycle burpee push-up ladder.  Go.  Possibly the beat turkey I have ever eaten.  Brandy fig glaze, yes, my 16 year old conceived of and executed that, wow.

Friday
Easy 2500 meters and some wall sits.  Be good to yourself old man.

Saturday
Shit ton of swing and press work.

Sunday
 15/15 7 rep pace x 40 with the 20kg

Monday
Go in and deliver the news.  Grim walk around the office; yes I am leaving.  Moving on.  Have to.  Oddest day ever.

Tuesday
More weirdness sending release letters out.  Bunches of them.  What have I started ?
CT kickass workout in PM.  Better.

Wednesday
Weirdness continues.  No hairy eyeball yet, they are still in shock.

Thursday
Up to CT to throw it down hard.  15/15 x 80.  7 rep pace, her tripped out, me killing it.

Friday
Does not get any stranger than this.  Weirder and weirder as afternoon wears on.  Old guys pretty pissed.  I've walked out with more than a dozen clients, and they are now realizing what they should have seen two years ago.  See ya ostrich.  To Pradeep and the mat.  Cause it'll make me better.

Saturday
Glitches all around.  Brigid sums it up nicely:  "They're really rolling out the welcome wagon for you huh Dad ?"  As I sit with my boxes in an unfamiliar hallway trying to get into the office I've arranged.
Could be bad but get in and BG helps me and Brigid move stuff.  The van is unloaded in six trips.  Office is a fucking mess.
Night, new firm Christmas party at Left Bank.  Everyone amused.  Goes well but drank too much.

Sunday.
Back in to set up computer, unload.  See what's what.  Need help.  Do not freak out.

Monday
By 10:30 functioning again. Email intact, not missing a beat.  Work streaming in.  It is as I had hoped/sold.  They don't care about the number or address, as long as you are on the other end.  Phew.  Hit it Monday night hard.

Tuesday
At the mothership in SR.  Seamless work flow, busy all day.  No exercise.

Wednesday
Same as above.  Except old firm freaking out about subs and tomorrow's court appearance, trashing me.  Fuck you, grow up.  No, you are not.

Thursday
Effective five minutes and motion is resolved.  Rest of day is first full, killing it.  New client meeting, other impending shit storms, setting up 2013.  Happier and happier.  Hit gym hard, 24kg press ladders x 5 and stuff in between.  Barbacco after, then go pick up Ian.  Better.  New normal.

Friday
Shut out of pot conference with LDC.  Pretty good day.  MH at noon.  Productive afternoon.  Drinks with former judge and pot lawyers at the Clift.  LDC lovely and uber-competent.

Saturday
Shop, vacuum, snatches, 15/15 7 rep pace x 80.  Boom.

Sunday
Back to office.  They like me and so have made space.  Move boxes out, get chairs in, work for two hours.  Get the feel.  In gym for effective barbell and dumbell session, then 10k meters on rowing machine watching 49er's beat Dolphins.  Nervous system fried, this has been a month not to be forgotten.  Would not have it any other way.

Change is good.  As for all those freaking out:  that you did not see it coming is very instructive.

Bandwagon Redux

"Poets are like baseball pitchers.  Both have their moments.  The intervals are the tough things."

Robert Frost

They did it again. Shut down pitching and sparkling D and the Giants are World Series champs for the second time in three years. The sports media have given them little credit (unlike people who actually know something, ie Jim Leyland) droning about the Detroit hitting not showing up; as Brian Wilson said: "maybe the pitching did."
He is spot on of course, but people always want to focus on what's going wrong than right. Highlight of the series has been @KaseyAnderson's hysterical mock exchanges between McCarver and Joe Buck:

McCarver: "I'm not sure we'll see Valmermaid again, folks."
Buck: "Valverde."
McCarver: "Vamvermon."
Buck: "VALVERDE."
McCarver: "Correct."

On the career front starting to back away from the ledge to either get a running start or turn away. If you're going to jump better make it a strong one lest you land on your face. Professional mantra: Don't be a fuck up.  Looks like it'll be a running start.

Have not posted since 10/12, suffice it again to say that the workouts and yoga classes have been many many many, such a busy bee. Wednesday 10/24 started a ten day swing intensive of 1000 24kg swings per day. Finished that Saturday 11/3. The breath ladders leave one glowing and CT's brutally efficient 80-60-40-20 ladder single arm swing ladder equals a ton of volume in a very short time. The 24kg has never felt so light and feeling strong strong strong. Yoga practice has slipped, checked that slide that this week.

We had a parade last Wednesday. Route was different and not nearly as photo friendly, but did get a decent shot of Hunter Pence. People were way happy and that all was way good.

More HSB photos, because B is so happy in them and so, therefore, am I:

Parade photos:

Saturday Austin City Limits, Civil Wars and Punch Brothers. Barry cracking up at Joy Williams. Punch Brothers great musicianship.

Sunday 11/4. Yoga, no swings. Ally playing good music.  All Sunday in the office, come up to cook really good dinner.

Monday
Yoga

Tuesday
Throw down with CT, election day workout.  Impossibly good results and stay up late rolling in it.

Wednesday
Yoga, Pradeep.  Really really hard.

Thursday
28kg fun:
1-3 c&p ladder
5 double 28 front squats
10+10 rows
30 one hand swings
TGU
x5

Friday
Water rower, 5000 meters in 19:43.

Next three weeks are going to be very very interesting.

That Time Of Year

"And I'm not sure what the trouble was that started all of this
The reasons all have run away but the feeling never did
It's not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live."
Conor Oberst, Lua

The A's won the AL West yesterday. The Giants have been dominant for a few months. 49ers started well, missteps in Minnesota but appear to have "rebooted" with a thorough shellacking of the Jets on Sunday last and a crushing destruction of Buffalo while we were listening to the Knitters and Boz.

So it'll be great sports in October [reality check, both baseball teams are down 0-2 as of this writing, may be worse by the time I hit post, so be it. Oops, no, its better, Giants came back in a three game sweep but A's got stearolled by Verlander]; the excitement down town will be palpable.
All of that takes a back seat this weekend as Hardly Strictly kicks off tomorrow. The annual three day blowout will start at noon. Time to play hooky and take B into the park where he will smile softly and dance, shyly at first, drop shyly quickly. Man knows what he likes. Hardly Shyly Bluegrass it is.

Monday
From Fito, like this.

Tuesday
In early for rows and wall sits, a few heavy cleans. Lunch with LD, then 4:00 meeting stretches to 7:45, three lawyers in a windowless room trying to get recalcitrant trustee to just MOVE. Apparent progress, be patient.
It's Indian summer and hit top of Lyon St. at 8:00, CT shows up to run stairs. I throw down VO2 max at 8 rep pace for 20 minutes and grab a quick bite for the long haul home.

Wednesday
Early am meeting re FUTURE. Need to blow off steam by noon, down to dank nowhere basement gym 30 one arm swing to 1 get up x 10. Late pm yoga.

Thursday

Shoulders jacked up gonna try to squeeze in workout. Rows and back squats 's ok but got a bunch of work to get though. Back for late yoga, throw feet up wall and start snoring. Yep, I'm done.

Friday
First day of HSB. B is grinning ear to ear by 6:45 am. Stake out great turf, take the 5 down to the gym. Park in the yoga studio with two 24's:

press ladders 1-5+1-5
front squats, twin
20 renegade rows
20 snatches
x5

Back and land for Simone Felice who is great. Chuck Prophet tears it up to a sleepy crowd who pick up to Summertime Thing.

Beachwood Sparks play a set of trippy California 90's beach space.

The big guns come out with Ben Kweller, who looks like a tiny little enormously talented 12 year old.

Jenny Lewis comes out late in short black dress. Watson Twins play stereo Doppelgangers. B rushes the front, no one gonna stop him.

Jenny lights it up like only she can; that red hair flying to the kickoff of See Fernando:

If we could bottle that energy gas would not be 5.00 plus per gallon. Heart her more than a little.  Blew the clouds out of the sky with this:

Conor comes out, Barry gets down:

Saturday
Can't do it. Shop, vacuum. Get over it.

Sunday
In early with B. Drop tarp at Rooster and get on the bus. Do realfitmd's long cycle, burpee, goblet squat ladder, up and down.  Back to HSB.  Catch Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller.  Then head over to Star and watch Dave Alvin blow up the stage with his stratocaster:

Then its Boz, Nick Lowe, Todd Snider and The Civil Wars.  B and me, happy together in front of Conor:

Up front at a musical event is the one place folks accept B with no reservation.  The folks who I am sure would walk right by on the street without noticing him feed off of his joy.  He gets high fives, fist bumps; people want to take his picture.  Jenny Lewis smiled at him.  I need to find a way to replicate that often, improve his quality of life.  He loves dancing up front so.

Monday, yoga with Ally.

Tuesday, throw it down with CT late.  Pilates studio packed, people moving gently.  Except us, finishing off 40 minutes with six minutes of true Tabata throwing the 24, moving like a freight train.

Wednesday
Pradeep.

Thursday
Three times through the Destroyer complex.  Brutal.  Feel spent throughout the day but got back for 300 one arm sings and 10 get ups.  Boom.

Friday
Partner retreat.  Not my favorite activity, but it is that time of year . . . next is gonna bring change.

Monday, October 1, 2012

Weeks Later . . .

"Science has not yet mastered prophecy. We predict too much for the next year and yet far too little for the next 10."
Neil A.

Three weeks and a bunch later.  Cannot go back and reconstruct the workouts.  Actaully I could but fuck that.  Suffice it to say there have been plenty of them, including in which (Pooh reference) did the RKC snatch test on 4:58 with the 24.  Won a trial, settled two cases, pulled in huge receivables, and looking forward to HSB.

Neil Armstrong played the ukelele in quarantine, what would you do with such time ?

Friday very interesting; if it brings change it will be my decision.  Change just for it's sake not necessarily optimal.

Live long and prosper.  I would not trade this for anything.

    Friday

Ease on out of the week.  Please people, do nothing stupid.  Ha.
Friday late its Pradeep for bunches of awesome.  Get out and walk down to ballpark.  Outstanding game and good time hanging out with LD and KO.

    Saturday
Running around with Brigid, shopping.  Ian says yes, he will go see Jason Isbell & 400 Unit with me and B at GAMH.  Ok !  We head in.

Barry walks in like he owns the place.  He wants to sit front stage right.  We head upstairs, he has none of it.  He wants to dance.  Makes a bee line for the stools side stage right, staff only.  Sec guy waives him past and Barry and I are set up for the evening with the best seats in the house.  Kasey Anderson opens.  Great set.  Good natured (almost) audience ribbing.  Check out Mercy:                                                                           Jason comes on and tears it up for two hours.  Amanda Shires is running around all over; Barry smiles his way to front and center, I lurk off to the left, 8 feet away.  Bunch of folks beaming at him and he is rocking out.  Front and center, in a crowd, completely comfortable.
    Great. Night.  Must do more.

    Sunday

      Monday
In court.  Get  back late afternoon in time for yoga.  Wanna crush something to level up so get through destroyer complex twice.  Dripping sweat to start class and heart does not slow down to an appropriate yoga pace until 30 minutes in.  60 minute class, all good.

      Tuesday
One too many glasses of red watching the Raiders in one of the worst games ever played the night before.  Hit it for 16kg snatch 15/15 seven rep pace x 70, felt like shit.  Upstairs in group fit room, by the end felt beastly.                                                                                             Good day unfolds, may be very very good, TBD . . .

It's All Too Beautiful

"What did you do there ?
I got high . . ."
Steve Marriott

Friday
90 minute EH

Saturday
Dog walk with first dog and second son. One of the two was joyful. She slobbers and smells like a bog; he grumbles and often smell like a bog.  Other than that they have little in common.  She is black; he is blond.  She is cheerful; he is not.  She is thrilled to see me; him, not so much.

 Wednesday
Yes, you are 53. It shows in your face, and your gait the first ten minutes of the morning.  Other than that you're pretty youthful, as long as you don't start talking abut music.  Then really old . . .
Pradeep at 1:00. Smoke. Wish the old dude (younger than me) would not always pick the spot beside me. You will not keep up and bending over hands on knees sucking wind is not a pose; drop to Childs for god's sake. You really think you know better ? Hah
Predictably dysfunctional dinner. I shop, cook, and eat in the dark with B and B.

Thursday
Fucking long day; massage. Rest day, but for the cortisol infused six hours. Dinner with Brigid, rocks.

Friday
Quick hit with the destroyer complex 3x through. Farmers Walk super set. Boom again.

Saturday
Hit gym for barbell work.  Bench, back squats, and deads on that ratty gym floor.  Bring my 24 for swings at the end and all the old guys lookin' at me funny.

Sunday
Go in looking forward to CT class on MG.  Beach time for ecstatic labrador beforehand.  Towing off she cheerfully approaches a pit, which gos for her throat.  Gets my hand and I am fucked for Kbells.  Bitch, the owner, not Rose.

Monday
90 minutes Pradeep, om om om.  Slow long class full of extended stretches.  In the steam room we are talking and he is so enthusiastic about teaching.  Loving loving loving it.  The joy of the artist.  Rubs off.

Slow morning and escape for Pradeep again.  Complete contrast to Monday, sweat flying fast flow.  Feel very strong, amazingly so after arm and shoulder pump the day before.  Don't wonder about it, just take it and see what tomorrow brings.

Bill and Michelle, killing it.
